MORE ABOUT OUR GROUP

The Central London Humanist Group brings together humanists from across London in an active community focused on having fun, meeting new people, learning together and raising a voice against threats to the UK’s secular values. If you are a London humanist, you’re curious about what humanism is and what it can contribute to your life, or you’re simply someone of no faith, then you are invited to join one of the fastest growing and most active humanist groups around.

The CLHG is affiliated to the British Humanist Association, but we operate independently. We’ve been going now for seven years, and in that time the group has grown from a dozen or so members meeting regularly in a pub to – at the last count – 840 members and growing. Thanks to the efforts of the committee members and all the members of the group, we offer a great mix of talks and social events, from meetups in the pub to picnics and guided walks through to theatre nights and film evenings.

The growth in our membership – backed up by the fact there’s a strong and active community of humanists across London behind us – means the CLHG is increasingly at the forefront of representing humanist values through campaigning against threats to freedom of conscience and sexuality, and raising awareness of the rise of increasingly confident – and demanding – religious communities. Committee member Marco Tranchino led our involvement in the Protest the Pope meeting in 2010, encouraging secularists and humanists to speak out against the negative impact of religious on minority groups across London. In 2011, he’ll lead the CLHG support for the March for a Secular Europe.

Our active support for humanism extends beyond the UK: for a number of years, the CLHG has supported the Emitos Girls Humanist Football Club in Uganda. The project, located outside the capital Kampala, seeks to educate and empower girls aged 12-20 years through football. It provides educational sessions for the girls and parents alike, covering issues from the prevention of HIV/AIDs to the benefits of female empowerment, and encourages girls to compete alongside boys both on and off the pitch. Thanks to the generosity of CLHG members and the general public we have transferred over £4,100 to the project. And the girls now run out onto the pitch proudly wearing football strip emblazoned with “Central London Humanists”. You can find out more here.

Fun. Conversation. Debate. Community. Activism. You’ll find them all by being part of the CLHG. Come along to one of our events and find out what we’re all about. We do ask for a  small voluntary donation of £2.00 at events and meetings, but this is waived for anyone joining us for the first time.

We’re run by a small volunteer committee but operate in a very open and non-bureaucratic way. We have one AGM a year, at which the committee is voted in. To be a ‘voting member’ of the Central London Humanists you must be a paid up member of the BHA – membership is £35 p.a. concessions £20 p.a.. (to join go here). There are a number of ways you can find out more about what the CLHG does. Try out our YouTube Channel. Hook up with us on Facebook. Most importantly, sign up to our Meetup site to get regular email updates on all our events. If you’re a new member, we hold regular social meetups for people who are new to the group, allowing them to meet other newbies and find out what we’re all about.

Come and join us and help us promote the positive values of humanism.
